Australian School holidays 2010 (so you can avoid the crowds if you want to!)

| The Aussie school holidays can mean busy beaches and expensive accommodation… |
So not only do I get lots of lustful people checking out the site right now (and who can blame them!), but I get a lot of questions about when are good months to visit Australia and travel around.
The short answer I always give is that there is no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ time to go to Australia (the very thought!), but of course there are more ideal times to visit different parts of the country and also cheaper times to go, times that are less crowded, and times to miss the wet or overly hot weather. Lots of info about that sort of thing in my free guide to Aussie hols (sign up to the blog on the right to get your mitts on that).
Another thing to consider when planning a trip Down Under is the school holidays in Australia, as like anywhere this will add to road, rail and air traffic, and of course to the price of places to stay.
So like last year (and the year before!) below is my summary of when the Aussie school holidays are in all the states:
Here’s what this can mean for your holiday planning:

Right now in January is the busiest time for Australians to be on holiday. The end of December and January is our equivalent to the July and August school holidays, so this is ‘peak season’ for most parts of Australia to visit. And when I say peak season I mean: busy roads, busy airports, expensive accommodation rates, etc. So for most of the temperate South (Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and up to Brisbane), it’s a busy and expensive time to visit during the main ’summer’ school holidays.
Those lucky Australians have lots to discover in their own backyard so do expect accommodation, flights and camp sites to fill up in the school holidays, but as with any trip, plan ahead and you’ll be right

Hey Lucy, i have been in Perth area these last twosince beginning Dec and agree there are long kids holidays. but while the big campsites are deff booked out, for UK visitors the main impression is of how sparsely populated the state it (WA). even now the roads are clear, the beaches empty, and shock horror, everyone is friendly and calm.
