The (Australian Airfare) Sales have started!

Posted on 28 December 2007 | Related Categories: Flights, News, Travel

The Australian flight offers have been pouring into my inbox yesterday and today — as if I ever need an excuse to think about booking a flight to Australia!

The good news is that lots of cheap fares are on offer (and no queuing outside in the cold at 5am for a bargain — like they do on the High Street!).

UK and Australian Airport and Airline Strikes in January…

Posted on 22 December 2007 | Related Categories: Flights, News, Travel

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news for the New Year, but forewarned is forearmed, as they say (meaning you might want to work out a Plan-B now!).

There are reports of airport operator strikes planned for the UK in the New Year, some cabin crew are striking, and also Qantas engineers now plan to strike too, which may seriously affect domestic Australian Flights…

My Christmas Wish — One (amazing) way to visit Sydney…

Posted on 21 December 2007 | Related Categories: Cities, Things to do, Travel

If Father Christmas is feeling quite flush this year (although I don’t think I will ever be this good!), then I would like to visit Sydney as part of the Abercrombie and Kent ‘9 Wonders of the World’ Private Jet tour taking off 13 January 2008 please.

Starting in Miami and ending up back in New York, the trip takes in Machu Picchu (Peru), Easter Island (Samoa), Sydney (Australia — of course!), Angkor Wat (Cambodia), Schwedagan Pagoda (Myanmar), Taj Mahal (India), Muscat (Oman), Petra (Jordan), and the Pyramids in Cairo (Egypt).

Taxi! The low-down on Australian cabs

Posted on 17 December 2007 | Related Categories: Cities, Travel, Weather

I was answering a question today about Taxi fares on a Forum, and thought would just share a little bit of info today about Australian cabs.

We have got into the habit of always catching a taxi from the airport where ever we land now in an Australia city (unless we have a hire car), as is always the easiest option, I think, that will take you (and not all the other people on the transfer bus first!) direct to your accommodation — which after a long, long flight is really all you can think about.

NYE in Sydney – It’s not too late to join the party!

Posted on 12 December 2007 | Related Categories: Cities, News, Things to do

Being in Sydney for New Years Eve is pretty special.

If you can possibly organise your trip so you are in Sydney for New Years Eve (book your hotel well in advance!), you will enjoy a really amazing evening with some incredible fireworks. Of course, you also get to leap into the New Year ahead of most of the rest of the world, too, which is always a great thought for impatient people like me :-)

My perfect Australian beaches…

Posted on 10 December 2007 | Related Categories: Beaches, Places to stay

First, I have to explain my beach criteria (of course!)

  1. There cannot be a road by the beach.  The perfect beach should be reached either through palm trees, sand dunes, climbing down a cliff, etc… but not be visible from a road. I just don’t think you get that ‘beach seclusion’ just-me-and-the waves feel if there is traffic trundling by
  2. No pebbles. Sorry, just can’t have them!
  3. Warm (ish is OK, just not nail-biting freezing) water
  4. A great beach has decent depth of sand strip (you see I take this quite seriously!) between the edge of the beach and the water
  5. The perfect beach can not be too crowded (and by this I mean not very crowded at all i.e. you go for a walk and see a handful of other people, not a concert hall amount in a concert-hall-size space)
  6. The beach must have a view. Here I mean something like a bay curving round, or some islands offshore.

This is when you will start to understand how I like to travel…

I am your typical 5-star tastes with 3-star budget person, and I have very high standards when it comes to accommodation!

Where to start? (with planning your Australian holiday)

Posted on 4 December 2007 | Related Categories: Cities, Flights, News, Travel, Weather

I have actually had a bit of a block the past few days on what to write next about going on holiday to Australia. The reason isn’t a lack of things to write about though — in fact the complete opposite — there are too many things to write about! I haven’t known where to start…

And I know this is how it can feel when you first decide you want to go to Australia on holiday…

You think — I’ll just book the flights to Sydney and then we’re off… but then you realise the Reef is quite far away from Sydney, and you quite fancy seeing that too, and then there’s the Rock (Uluru) to consider too… and everywhere else besides.
